Bernardo Alviz & Phoebe Russell
Over his academic studies in Colombia, Germany, and Australia, Bernardo has become an enthusiastic and renowned artist/bassist of contemporary music. This musical passion intimately resonates with the artistic idiosyncrasy of Phoebe Russell, who is a double bassist striving to illustrate her virtuosity and unique understanding of the musical essences ranging from traditional orchestra to innovative solo exhibition.
The album released on May 9, 2024, titled Lienzos y Recuerdos, is inspired by Bernardo composing and performing music only with his left hand during his Phd research. Combining the fascinating acoustics of double bass with manipulations of electric effects, Bernardo and Phoebe establish an enigmatic and immersive atmosphere that delightfully leads the audience into their enchanting musical universe.
It an excellent opportunity for Corella Recordings to arrange an interesting conversation between Bernardo and Phoebe and Rusted Satellites, a radio session organized by the Brisbane-based community radio station, 4ZZZ. Bernardo and Phoebe discussed their compositional inspirations with emphasis on their tracks, “Sepulcro para un recuerdo” and “...y termina.” You can listen back here.
Durriwiyn
Durriwiyn (pronounced Dar-Da-Win), AKA. Jamaine Wilesmith, is a proud Worimi and Biripi man who amalgamates his personal narrative with idiosyncratic sonic characteristics. Durriwiyn’s his music has sophisticatedly explored and represented his role as an Indigenous singer/songwriter, and his song, “Little Bird,” has received consistent praise since its release in 2023.
Released on May 16, 2024, Durriwiyn’s single “Fade Away” carries on his distinctive dark and dramatic pop tone, narrating a story from a personal perspective by integrating delicate vocal passages with energetic grooves. Accompanied by its vivid music video, this single vibrates with the artist’s innermost sentiments, as stated by Durriwiyn: “This song represents the most vulnerable aspect of my sense of self, engaging in a deep and personal conflict between two opposing mindsets: the optimistic and hopeful voice, and the defeated cry for help.”
Piano Day Compilation
Corella Recordings celebrates the milestone of Piano Day, a day of honoring the magnificent instrument of the piano and its mesmerizing sonority, by releasing a compilation album including brand-new solo piano compositions by local artists on March 28, 2024. An engrossing intertwining among the gorgeous melodic soundscapes, pulsing motoric circuits, battering storms, and tranquil atmosphere delivers a diversity of rich sensations enjoyed by contemporary musicians with piano.
The compilation is delighted to feature compositions by Madeleine Cocolas, Connor D’Netto, Anthony Moles, Alexandra Mison, Piers Connor Kennedy, and Ben Marshall, and performances from Samuel Mitchell, Daniel Johnson, Mac Johnson, and Alexandra Mison (performing her own compositions). Excellent efforts are credited to our regular and cherished professions, including Caleb Colledge, Chris Perren, and all other diligent team members.
Ray April
Her music subtly strikes an exquisite equilibrium between radiance and introspection by embracing the names “Ray” and “April,” which correspond to the rays of sunshine and rainy days, respectively. Ray April’s two singles from her EP Chasing Echoes, “Louder” and “”Only Charm,” have achieved their success through great receptions from listeners.
“Louder,” Ray’s debut single, was released on April 11, 2024. The passionate and heartfelt vocal delivery, enhanced by an impulsive backdrop of synth and drums, lends the song an appealing elegance. Released one month later, the narrative of “Only Charm” is even more intriguing as it unfolds an endearing inquisitiveness attracted by the story between Ray and one of her best friends. Enjoy more of Ray’s artistic endeavors in her just-released Chasing Echoes!
It is wonderful to be part of Ray’s fantastic performance at the 2024 Spectrum Festival of The University of Queensland, during which Durriwiyn also delivered a marvelous show. An on-air live talk between Ray and ABC News is another great achievement to see!
