Age of Leisure presents - ‘Textures’ feat. Flora Wong

Recently the folks at Meanjin/Brisbane-based indie label and online music journal Age of Leisure launched their second musical release, Textures.
Age of Leisure describes Textures as ‘a love letter to the Meanjin underground’, the album offering a spirited and diverse ‘taster’ of local post-genre artists.
Each individual composition by the seven respective sound practitioners featured on the compilation is inspired by meditations on ‘physical and non-physical objects’, prompting listeners to reimagine ‘the textural qualities of visual objects’ in a musical context (Age of Leisure).
Textures is anything but passive listening; aural-explorers can expect commingling of traditional and digital instrumentation, amelodic lines and arrhythmic layers that compete for attention, reflecting the visual experience of the overlooked and ordinary through the language of sound.
Textures features tracks by two artists affiliated with UQ’s School of Music: composer, producer, and casual academic Madeleine Cocolas, as well as Corella Recordings’ very own genre-blurring violinist, Flora Wong (黃芷蕾).

Flora’s contribution to Textures – her debut as a solo artist – ‘洗米 (Washing Rice)’ is at once meditative and filled with tension. The composition exemplifies her artistic capacity to inform the ambient and experimental genres with a sound and sensibility that derives from her equal appreciation for contemporary classical music.

Wong’s debut EP, commissioned through her collaborative Geburstag project, is set for release mid-2022 through UQ School of Music’s brand-new in-house imprint Corella Recordings.
